Back to top.The electronic steering lock that Mercedes has installed in a wide variety of their vehicles has become a very well-known sore spot for owners. This simple theft prevention device fails and fails often, and when it does it can leave you with a stranded vehicle and a huge repair bill. If your ignition or steering lock are starting to go bad you should replace them right away, before they leave you stranded and while replacing them is still easy. While the dealership can charge thousands of dollars for replacing this unit you can do the work yourself and save some serious money.

The most difficult part of the job is that you will be working blind on one nut but the article will walk you through everything so you will be fine.

Make sure that the very first thing you do is install the key in the ignition and that it frees up the electronic steering lock. Then leave the key in even though you are disconnecting the battery. If the lock is not open when you start you will not be able to remove it from the steering column. You must now buy them through a MBZ dealership service dept where installation and programming is required by an authorized MBZ mechanic.

You will need to remove the gauge cluster so please see our article on gauge cluster removal. You also need to remove the airbag and steering wheel. Please see our article on steering wheel removal for additional assistance. Next, remove the steering column switch module red arrow and trim surround.

This comes off as one unit so please see our article on steering column for further information. Working below the dash first remove the two bolts by the steering knuckle red arrows and then the bolts closer to the dash yellow arrow The steering shaft will be free once the bolts are removed so gently lower it while removing the last two bolts. Disconnect the wiring connection for the lock along the left side of the shaft red arrow. I found the easiest way to do this was to reach between the shaft assembly and dash red arrow with one hand and the other from below.

This photo illustrates the electronic steering lock off the shaft. The grub bolt red arrow will be facing towards the front of the vehicle while it is installed. You need to remove the 13mm nut that holds this grub bolt in place red arrow. You will need to do this blind or by feel but it is the only nut back there. With the nut off you will press the grub bolt into the lock assembly red arrowand then lift the locking assembly up and out from the steering column.

If the grub bolt will not press in the steering is locked, and you will have to start over making sure the steering is free and leave the key in place.Log in or Sign up. Mercedes-Benz Owners' Forums. This site uses cookies. By continuing to use this site, you are agreeing to our use of cookies.

Evening all, Got a W Recently, the Electronic Steering Lock has started playing silly buggers; sometimes requiring the key to be removed and inserted again before it will unlock and allow the engine to start. Does anone have any experience of removing it and using an emulator to fool the EIS and allow the engine to start? Thanks David. Can't see how that works, lock is coded to car???? Any links to said item??? Cole MBSJun 14, I know mark at RMK was working on a solution, I dont know if one was found yet.

Its 3 wires that go in the place of the ESL and give the correct can response to the EIS to say its "open" or "closed". Spent some time on Google tonight. So, I thought to myself, what happens if you put the key in, turn ign on so that ESL is disengaged, and then disconnect the battery? Will they ever wrk in perfect harmony again?

Thanks, David. NaraicJun 15, This bloke explains how to change the ESL motor is some detail. Wish me luck If you get it unlocked, just get the motor unbolted asap. The concern was a no crank no start condition. We had a laugh due to the fact that we did not want to remove the key.

We just wanted it to start. A vehicle scan revealed faults in the electronic ignition switch EIS stating that there was no communication from the electronic steering lock ESL. A The electric steering lock has a malfunction. There is a signal fault or the message is faulty. Having seen this before, we ordered the ESL and appropriate workshop keys from the dealer. This was to prepare them for the possible extra parts that may have been needed.

I put the rest of this in the hands of my technician. Sometimes if you are lucky, you can bounce the steering wheel off the lock and start the car. The shock may or may not unlock the ESL and allow the vehicle to be started. With the vehicle running and the steering column unlocked, the job is much easier.

We had no such luck with this vehicle. Since we find it easier to work with the steering column removed, we removed it and we mounted the column in a vise. I like to use a Snap-On bur bit and a die grinder, it removes the bolt easily. Once the bolt is cut, the ESL can be removed. We put the steering column back in the car and inserted our workshop key. The LED on the workshop key is supposed to light up for about 10 seconds, then go out. This one lit up for a second and then went out.

This was not the first time that an EIS would have been compromised so the tech was ready to order one and lucky for me, I prepared the customer for this. What we saw was a little different. The ESL has a few things that need to happen, Transport Protection, Activation, Personalized, all of these need a check in the yes column to move forward.

We only had one. So instead of grabbing an EIS we asked for another workshop key. The dealer was a little sore about it but gave us another one for an exchange of cash.

I am writing to tell you that if I did not see this with my own eyes, I would not have believed it. This car took 6 workshop keys to complete the process, unheard of. It was up to me to inform the vehicle owner of why we needed to keep ordering keys but at least an EIS was not ordered only to get the same result.

It only takes a minute to sign up. My MB C will not start. I put the key in and turn it but nothing happens. The radio and internal lights do come on but not the car. The steering wheel is locked and can't put it on Neutral either to push it out the garage.

Here is a list of troubleshooting steps that I tried obtained from reading forums and calling around. Although the internal lights would come on and was able to lock and unlock the car using main remote key I thought it just did not have enough juice to crank the car.

A new battery did not fix the issue. Tried turning the car on using the spare key. If the battery on your main remote key is low it can be the root cause for the car not starting per local mechanic. Visually inspected all fuses and looked for a blown fuse, none found. I will be keeping this car for ever so I purchased a decent code scanner I can diagnose what the internal computer logs is giving out. I suspect the error keeping the car from starting are the A15F11 and A This video shows the unit at fault.

The car has to go to the dealer for repair since it will eventually require key programing something only dealers can do. I just repaired the identical car, the ignition does not come on and the wheels are locked and it sets steering column mechanical fault codes.

W204 Steering Lock fault

This means the solenoid that locks the column to stop the wheel turning is faulty, after it receives the unlock command from the electronic ignition switch it tells the ignition switch it is unlocked and then the ignition switch enables the ignition.

Mercedes won't sell these parts to anyone they say they are security items and you have to pay the dealer to install and code the modules.

Completely illegal! I found a company that if you send them the column and electronic ignition switch they remove the faulty solenoid and fit an emulator and program everything to work upon installation. You have to clear all the fault codes after.

No more lock problem. In MB, the ignition key is inserted into a component called EZS which is basically an ignition key control unit which also doubles as an immobilzer control unit. E ngine control unit, EZS, transmission control unit and electronic steering lock control unit are all part of the immobiliser system. Based on your symptoms with respect to shifting, steering and starting I guess the issue is with the ignition key control unit.

Start checking the fuse. Connect the scanner and read the actual values. Also read the DTCs.

I had issue years ago starting my C after car battery replacement from AutoZone. I initially thought it was battery related issue, but the AAA tech use to work for Benz Services got my car started in 10 seconds. He told me the car was in "Security Lockdown". He recommended following steps in order. Note: Try Procedure 2 only if first one doesn't work. Same issue happened to me 3 weeks ago after my car was sitting in driveway for 3 weeks. I searched internet for couple days trying to recall these steps, but could not find it anywhere!

Luckily, I had documented above step and emailed it to myself. Please spread this steps in other posts as I've read about similar symptoms I had reported. Again, it may not solve the ESI or other issues, but this is 10 second steps that may save lot of money and headache for people so please do pass it around.
